Why transcripts beat video links for AI work
Many AI assistants can’t watch a video, and those that can often summarize from limited information. Pasting the actual transcript gives the model every word that was said, so you can ask detailed questions, request exact quotes, and check the answers against the source.
Preparing a transcript for a model
- Remove timestamps for summaries and rewriting. Keep them when you want the model to cite where something was said.
- Put your instruction first, then the transcript between clear markers such as TRANSCRIPT START and TRANSCRIPT END.
- For long videos, split the text into parts and send them in order. The ChatGPT packager does this for you.
- Tell the model to use only the transcript and to say when something isn’t in it. This reduces invented details.

Check before you rely on it
The transcript is only as accurate as the captions. Auto-generated captions can mishear names and numbers, and a model will repeat those errors confidently. Verify anything important against the video at the relevant timestamp.
